Peel Side Effects

Posted on 16 October 2007

Potential side effects
With all peels the potential risks are the same namely scarring, loss of pigmentation or temporary increase in pigmentation. Thankfully with light to medium depth peels scarring and loss of pigmentation are rarely seen. However, temporary increase in pigmentation can be seen especially with medium depth peels in darker skin types.

Peels do not thin the skin. On the contrary, repeated peels will generate more collagen ensuring that the skin will remain rejuvenated and in optimum condition.

For pigmentation problems, peels are usually done in combination with fading agents such as hydroquinone and kojic acid. The P.C.A. peel has these ingredients already added.

In conclusion, peels are still a very useful and safe procedure in cosmetic medicine. They can be the ideal treatment for a younger person with less severe skin problems. Peels can help to rejuvenate the complexion and can be tailored to suit the individual needs of different people. One cannot expect peels to be the miracle cure for everything or everybody, however they can offer many people an improvement in their complexion, which is relatively safe and inexpensive.
